Chapter 9

PC had fed the animals and was wielding the manure fork to load the wheelbarrow. She’d gotten dexterous enough with it to pick up a single stray nugget without spilling those already resting on the tines.

A diesel engine rattled, and PC raised her head. Justice Johnson was backing her truck up to the side gate to collect the manure for her mushroom farm. The detective scooped the last pile into the wheelbarrow and rolled it over to the gate. She could just pour it straight into Justice’s jute bag, saving work for both of them.

Rose’s wiry friend climbed out of the cab of her black truck, whistling and carrying a pile of sacks.

PC opened the gate. “You’re in a good mood this morning.”

“I am indeed. You remember my neighbor, Ben Masters, right?” Justice opened the tailgate.

“How could I forget him? I thought he was going to kill us.”

“I told you he was just misunderstood.” Justice fitted the opening of one bag around the wheelbarrow. “Well, his parents bought an organic berry farm in Oregon. He’s movin’ out there to run it for ’em. He’s sellin’ me his property, cheap.”

“So, the old family farm is re-united. That is good news.” PC shook the wheelbarrow handles to encourage the last of the load to slide into the sack. “What are you going to do with the place?”

Justice sealed the sack with a zip tie. “Well, Ben worked real hard to get that food forest up and runnin’. I’ll keep that, for sure. Might fence off some of the pasture for the goats. I showed you my Cashmere goats, right? I bought some Angoras, too. That little cabin he built might be a good rental during the festivals.”

“Sounds like you’ve got it all mapped out.”

“Yeah. I had to get some surveyors in to make sure the plat’s accurate. Don’t think it’s been surveyed since Granddad sold it during the Depression, and property lines may have gotten a little wiggly in all that time. Anyway, they’ll be out sometime this week. I believe there’s several jobs in the county they was gonna do.”

“I’m excited for you. I’ll tell Mama. Bet she’ll want a tour.”

They finished filling the bags and Justice left.

Rocky got home from work a little after 10:00 PM. He’d pulled a double shift because several people had called in sick. Cordite gleefully met him at the door and he bent to pet the dog.

When he stood up, he looked at his sister. “Mama already gone to bed?”

“Yeah. About fifteen minutes ago.”

“Listen. I’m starved. I got a text from Hope on the way home, and I’m goin’ to pick her up and go to the truck stop. You wanna come?”

PC nodded. “Yes. I’ve been wanting to talk to her.”

“I thought you might. Between Darla and her lawyer, her time’s been spoken for since she got out of jail. You mind drivin’? I’m whooped.”

PC picked up some papers and grabbed her keys. “We can also talk about the preliminary report on the Golobs that I got from Barnsdale this afternoon.
